A weekly resource for basketball coaches
by Coach Ashworth
Game Shots: On starting a newsletter for coaches, being grateful, and a funny parent text
Happy Wednesday - Make sure you’re taking game shots.
Quote of the Week: “I always remind coaches to ask themselves this…would you want to be coached by you?”
The Opening Tip
I started this newsletter with one goal in mind: to serve basketball coaches. No fluff. No paywalls. Just resources that provide true value and hopefully some levity, perspective, and even some humor along the way (let’s be honest, no one needs to laugh more than coaches).
In this weekly newsletter you will find:
Stories and thoughts from my coaching experience
Quotes, ideas, and lessons from some of the greatest coaching minds in the game of basketball
Resources like plays of the week, video breakdowns, drills, tips, and ideas
Funny stories in the news and even segments like “Crazy Parent of the Week”
Thank you for subscribing. Truly.
My mission has always been, and will always be, to support coaches around the world who love the game and want to keep getting better.
The Huddle
You should watch this video on Kentucky head coach Mark Pope:
My Thoughts: Coaching is a thankless job. You will spend countless hours helping other people’s kids and never get so much as a kind word or thank you. You win? No credit. You lose? All the blame. It’s a distinct part of the job, but that’s ok. Coaching is one of the only professions that other people (with no expertise or background in your field) get to come watch you perform your job and then judge you based on the outcomes. Can you imagine being able to go to someone else’s job and stand right by them as they work on a spreadsheet? Or comment to them and their boss on how poorly it was done? Can you visualize walking onto a construction site and telling the worker that you once put together a grill so you understand what he’s going through and how the job works? That’s essentially what you’ll inevitably go through as a coach during your career.
But Coach Pope puts together a great idea. Gratitude. The more grateful you are, the happier you can be. To be a coach is to get so many awesome opportunities and responsibilities. You get to have an impact where others can never reach. The arena of sports is still one of the rare places where you can have meaningful and deep connections. So the next time you’re feeling sorry for yourself, down about how bad things are going, or just feeling the natural frustrations that come with coaching… remember Coach Pope’s idea: The more grateful you are, the happier you can be.
Scouting Report
The Scouting Report is your weekly dose of resources that can help your coaching. Plays of the Week, videos, drills, etc. What’s the old joke? The best coaches are just the best thieves?
